James Parlour is a converted eighteenth-century barn on Alkington Grange, a family-run hundred-acre working arable and livestock farm a couple of miles from Whitchurch in north Shropshire. It sleeps twelve, holds a five-star rating with a Gold award, and comes with access to a shared indoor heated swimming pool and a multi-sports court, which is a great deal more than most farm barns offer.
Two steps lead into an open-plan living space. The living area has a fifty-inch Freeview television with Blu-ray and DVD players, the dining area is tiled, and the kitchen has two electric ovens, an electric hob, microwave, American-style fridge-freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. One bedroom sits on this floor, a twin with an en-suite holding a shower over the bath and a heated towel rail, also reachable from the hallway. Upstairs are a double with an en-suite shower cubicle, a room with a double bed and two singles, and a twin, served by a bathroom with a corner bath and shower attachment. Maximum occupancy is twelve guests plus two infants.
Outside is a large enclosed garden with a patio and furniture, and private parking for four cars. Oil central heating, electricity, bed linen, towels and superfast broadband are included; two travel cots, two high chairs and a stairgate are available on request, and there is a bike store, a shared external utility with a coin-operated tumble dryer, a coin-operated electric car charging point and a security deposit. Note the fenced pond in the grounds fifty yards away, and that the barn is non-smoking.
The site's shared facilities include the indoor heated pool, about 7.5 metres by 3.5 and open all year with exclusive slots booked on arrival, a court for mini tennis, badminton, basketball and short football, a play area for under-sixes, three brick-built barbecues, a woodland picnic area, a birdwatching area and a hundred acres of natural grounds. The Shropshire Union Canal is five minutes away, the Shropshire Way runs through the farm and the Mercian Cycle Path passes it. Whitchurch, two and a half miles off, has medieval, Tudor and Georgian buildings under St Alkmund's Church and is known as the home of tower clocks. Ellesmere, Hawkstone Follies, Ironbridge Gorge, Shrewsbury, Chester and its zoo are all within reach.
