Badger Cottage is a one bedroom barn conversion for two at Coombe Barn Cottages, at the end of a quiet lane on a working sheep farm in the village of Kelston, Somerset. It is rated three stars with a Gold award. The appeal here is the combination of a genuinely rural setting, with views out across the Somerset countryside, and a drive of only about ten minutes into the centre of Bath, three miles away. Exposed brickwork and beams give the interior an unforced country character, and the scale of the place, one bedroom, one sitting room, one bathroom, makes it well suited to a couple wanting somewhere quiet.
The sitting area has a comfortable sofa, a television and a dining table for two set in front of double patio doors, which open onto the patio in the courtyard. The kitchen is equipped with a microwave and freezer among the usual fittings, and wifi is provided. The bedroom is a double with a cast iron bedframe, a television and a wall of exposed stonework. The bathroom is the surprise: a spacious six jet corner whirlpool bath with a shower overhead, along with a basin and WC, which is a good deal more than a cottage of this size usually offers. Towels and bed linen are included, and en suite facilities are available.
Outside, the patio is the place to sit with a glass of wine and watch the light go off the fields at the end of the day. Ample private parking is provided free of charge on the gravelled area immediately outside the cottage, with a private car park on site. Badger is one of three barns at Coombe Barn Cottages, so the setting stays quiet even in high season; short breaks are offered in low season only. The farm is a working sheep farm, and the surroundings are open countryside and rolling hills rather than manicured garden, which is very much the point.
Walking begins at the door. One route climbs to Kelston Round Hill, which gives panoramic views over both Bath and Bristol, and the Cotswold Way passes through the farm, opening up a good deal more of the Cotswolds National Landscape. The Old Crown Inn, a traditional West Country pub, is about a ten minute walk down into the village and serves a good range of food along with local real ales and cider. Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is ten minutes away by car and offers the Roman Baths, Georgian architecture, shops and restaurants, with regularly scheduled walking tours including a well regarded ghost tour; Bath Spa is the nearest station. Bristol is around twenty minutes off, and further afield lie the Mendip Hills, Cheddar Gorge, Wookey Hole Caves, Wells Cathedral and Stonehenge.
