Hare Cottage is a one bedroom barn conversion for two at Coombe Barn Cottages, on a working sheep farm near the village of Kelston in Somerset, rated three stars with a Gold award. It is one of only three barns on the site, which sits in open countryside between Bath and Bristol, with rolling hills and farmland in every direction and views over fields from the windows and the veranda. Bath is around three miles and roughly ten minutes' drive away, which gives the cottage an unusual double character: properly rural, yet within easy reach of a World Heritage city. This is a pet free property.
The interior is full of character, with exposed stonework and beams and a wood burning stove in the open plan living area. That space holds a comfortable sofa for two, a television, a dining area for two and a fully equipped kitchen with a microwave and freezer among the fittings, with wifi provided. The bedroom has a comfortable double bed and scenic rural views, and the bathroom is fitted with a luxurious six jet whirlpool bath with an overhead shower, a handbasin and WC, which is a good deal more than a cottage of this size would normally offer. Towels and bed linen are included.
The veranda is the feature that sets Hare apart from its neighbours: seating for two with wide countryside views, well positioned for a morning coffee, an alfresco lunch or a glass of wine as the sun drops behind the hills. Ample private parking is provided free of charge, off road and immediately adjacent to the cottage. Short breaks are available all year round, so this works as a two or three night escape at any season, and the setting is quiet enough that the loudest thing you are likely to hear is sheep.
Walks begin at the door, including the climb to Kelston Round Hill for panoramic views over both Bath and Bristol, and the Cotswold Way passes through the farm, which opens up longer days on foot in the Cotswolds National Landscape; the Mendip Hills are a short drive away. A traditional West Country pub lies within a fifteen minute walk in the village. Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers the Roman Baths, the Royal Crescent, Georgian streets, independent shops and a strong choice of restaurants, and is served by Bath Spa station; Bristol, with its harbourside and galleries, is around ten miles off. Further afield the Cotswold villages of Cirencester, Stroud and Painswick reward a day's driving, and the Quantock Hills are within reach. Cycling, walking and wildlife watching are the natural activities here.
