Owl Cottage is a one bedroom barn conversion for two at Coombe Barn Cottages, on a working sheep farm close to the village of Kelston in Somerset, rated three stars with a Gold award. It is one of just three barns on the site, which sits within the southern reaches of the Cotswolds National Landscape with open countryside and rolling hills in every direction, and yet Bath is only three miles and roughly ten minutes' drive away. The particular pleasure of this one is the open plan living area, which rises to a high vaulted ceiling with elm beams overhead and looks out over the surrounding Somerset countryside. Pets are not accepted here.
The living space combines a comfortable sofa, a well equipped kitchen and a dining table for two under that vaulted roof. A microwave and freezer are among the kitchen fittings, and wifi is provided. The bedroom has a double bed with a wrought iron bedframe, and the bathroom holds a generously sized six jet corner whirlpool bath with a shower over, which is not something you often find in a cottage for two. Towels and bed linen are included. The whole place is arranged for two people rather than adapted from something larger, and it reads that way, with no wasted space and nothing surplus to requirements.
Outside is a raised patio, well positioned for alfresco dining in summer or for a chilled glass of wine as the sun goes down over the fields. Ample private parking is available free of charge immediately outside the cottage, off road and adjacent to the property. Short breaks are offered in low season only, so out of high summer this works well as a two or three night escape. The farm setting means the soundtrack is mostly sheep and birds, and the nights are properly dark.
Walks start from the doorstep, including the climb to Kelston Round Hill with its panoramic views over both Bath and Bristol; the Cotswold Way runs through the farm itself, which makes longer day walks straightforward. The Mendip Hills are a short drive away. For eating out, The Old Crown Inn in the village is about ten minutes on foot, a traditional West Country pub with a wide range of reasonably priced food and a good selection of local real ales and cider. Bath, ten minutes away by car, is a UNESCO World Heritage site with the Roman Baths, the Royal Crescent, Georgian streets, shopping and plenty of restaurants, plus regular events and excellent value walking tours including the ghost tour; Bath Spa is the station. Bristol is around twenty minutes' drive, and the Quantock Hills are within reach for a longer day out.
