Cedar Lodge is a two bedroom log cabin at Woodcombe Lodges, a family friendly site on the hillside just outside Minehead in Somerset. It sleeps four, sits on a single level, and looks out over garden, hills and valley towards Exmoor National Park. The interior is authentically wooden and brightly lit, and the lodge carries a Gold award. Up to two dogs are welcome, which makes this a straightforward choice for a couple or small family travelling with the dog and wanting somewhere quiet, green and within walking distance of a beach town. Three acres of shared gardens surround the lodges, and the site has a secluded, unhurried feel.
The best seat in the house is on the lounge veranda, looking across grassy hills and trees: it works for a coffee in the morning sun and for stargazing later on. Indoors, wooden tables and chairs make a comfortable gathering place on cooler days, and the living area is open to the kitchen so nobody is shut away while cooking. The kitchen is equipped with an electric oven, fridge freezer, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, kettle, coffee maker and a full complement of utensils, and a breakfast bar adds a sociable perch. Wifi is provided throughout, and there is a laundry room. The two bedrooms are a double with a king size bed and a twin with two single beds, well suited to younger members of the family. The family bathroom has a bath with shower over, washbasin, WC and a heated towel rail. Bed linen is provided.
Shared facilities at Woodcombe are a genuine part of the appeal, particularly with children in tow. The extensive gardens are good for wandering and wildlife spotting, and there is a children's play area with swings, a games room with table tennis, a snooker table and table football, and crazy golf. Garden furniture and a veranda give the lodge its own outdoor space within the wider site. Parking for two cars sits adjacent to the lodge. A cot and high chair are available, and a dog friendly pub lies within a thirty minute walk. Short breaks are offered in low and mid season, and the single storey layout keeps things simple for guests who prefer to avoid stairs.
Minehead is about twenty minutes' walk away, a mile from the lodge: a seaside town with a steam railway on the edge of Exmoor, a good beach, independent shops, pubs, cafes, a local shop and a supermarket. Exmoor National Park lies immediately beyond, with walking, cycling and horse riding across moorland and along the South West Coast Path. Nearby days out include Dunster Castle, Hestercombe Gardens, the Quantock Hills, Exmoor Zoo, Tropiquaria Zoo and Doniford Farm Park. The list of local activities is long: hiking, mountain biking, pony trekking, golf, sailing, canoeing, paddle boarding, coasteering, sea, river, coarse and fly fishing, angling, swimming, rockpooling, beachcombing and bird watching. The Somerset County Show is the main event in the local calendar. Taunton, twenty five miles away, is the nearest railway station.
