Middle Stolford Cottage is a sixteenth-century character farmhouse on a working farm in the Brendon Hills, just outside Exmoor National Park in west Somerset. It sleeps nine, seven adults and two children, across five bedrooms with three bathrooms, holds a five-star rating with a Gold award and takes three dogs. There is a private outdoor hot tub, and the setting is properly rural.
Inside there is a homely, large sitting room with ample seating and a woodburner, an open-plan kitchen and diner with a big dining table, a utility with a washing machine and a large boot room, which any family arriving off Exmoor will appreciate. All five bedrooms are on the first floor: a king-size with en-suite facilities, a further king-size, a twin, a second twin with two-foot-six beds and a single, served by a family bathroom upstairs and a shower room on the ground floor. A high chair and stairgate are available, and towels and bed linen are provided.
Outside is a large private fenced garden with a picnic table and a sunny terrace with sun loungers, plus an indoor-outdoor barbecue, a fire pit and a clay pizza oven for summer evenings. The hot tub sits out here too. Children have swings, a slide and climbing equipment, which needs supervising, and guests are welcome to use the full-size tennis court on the farm.
Clatworthy Reservoir is under a mile on foot, good for fishing from the south bank, though dogs are not permitted on the reservoir path; the farmland gives you the views without it. Wimbleball Lake, about five miles, is dog-friendly with trails and watersports including canoeing, paddleboarding and sailing. The Coleridge Way is close, and the site is good for stargazing. Watchet, seven miles off, has a marina, steam railway station, old port, museums, shops, restaurants and its Wednesday market. Wheddon Cross, seven miles away, sits at 980 feet and gives access to Dunkery Beacon and to Snowdrop Valley, which carpets in February. Wiveliscombe is seven miles, Taunton about fifteen and Minehead thirteen.
