The Cowshed is a barn conversion on Stolford Farm in the scenic Brendon Hills of west Somerset, sleeping two and holding a five-star rating. It takes up to two dogs and one cat, both for a charge, and its own small enclosed garden makes it a genuinely practical choice for people travelling with a dog. Good walks lead straight from the door.
The ground floor is one open-plan living area with a woodburner, starter logs provided, a large comfortable sofa and armchair, a flat-screen television and a compact kitchenette with a sink, kettle, microwave, air fryer and a single halogen hob; note there is no oven. A luxurious shower room with a large walk-in shower sits alongside. Upstairs is a roomy bedroom with a very comfortable Hypnos king-size bed. Underfloor heating warms the ground floor and there is a radiator upstairs, plus a lockable drying room and shower for wet gear and dogs, which is exactly the right facility here. The cottage suits a couple, or a couple with one infant if you bring your own travel cot and cot bedding.
Outside at the rear is a private enclosed garden with a bench, sun loungers in summer, a barbecue and a fire pit. Beyond that there are shared areas within the farm grounds to enjoy, including a shared fire pit overlooking a pond, and a full-size tennis court that guests are welcome to use. Parking is on the driveway.
Clatworthy Reservoir is under a mile on foot, with the south bank generally reckoned the best water for fishing, though dogs are not allowed on the reservoir footpath; you can walk the farmland instead and still get the views. Wimbleball Lake, ten minutes' drive, is dog-friendly and offers walking and cycle trails plus canoeing, windsurfing, paddleboarding and sailing. Treborough Hill equestrian venue is just over a mile away and the fifty-mile Coleridge Way passes close by. Watchet, seven miles off, has a marina, a steam train station, museums, shops, restaurants and weekly and monthly markets. Wheddon Cross, seven miles away, is the highest crossroads on Exmoor and the gateway to Snowdrop Valley and Dunkery Beacon, and Wiveliscombe, Taunton and Minehead are all within reach. The nearest pub serving food is under five minutes by car.
