Orchard Yurt sits on a small development of yurts and shepherd's huts near Allerford in Exmoor National Park, in a quiet corner of Somerset. It sleeps two, holds a five-star rating with a Gold award, and takes one medium-sized dog or two small ones for a charge. Its own private wood-fired hot tub is what lifts it above ordinary glamping.
Inside the yurt is a warming woodburner, a king-size double bed, a chest of drawers, bedside tables, a small table and bean-bag chairs, which is a good balance if you like camping but want rather more comfort and style. The cooking happens just outside, under an oak-framed gazebo, where there is a two-ring gas hob for basic cooking and boiling water along with a selection of cookware, crockery and cutlery. The yurt and the outdoor kitchen both run on solar power, covering the lights, a camping fridge and phone charging points, and a Bluetooth radio is provided.
There is no wifi here, which is arguably the point, and a selection of books and games is provided instead. As is usual with yurts there is no running water, though drinking water is available in the facilities building fifty metres away, where the yurt has its own private toilet and hot shower room stocked with towels and toiletries. Bed linen and towels are provided, and there is a barbecue and parking.
Exmoor is a fine part of the country for a relaxed glamping break, with a great variety of outdoor pursuits and a string of quaint villages. Allerford itself has the well-photographed fifteenth-century packhorse bridge, and the thatched National Trust cottages at Selworthy and Bossington are nearby. Porlock, a mile and a half off, has pubs, restaurants, tea rooms and shops. Minehead and its beach are around ten minutes' drive, and Bossington beach, Porlock Weir, North Hill and Dunkery Beacon are all within walking or short driving distance.
Additional charges: No additional cleaning fees.
