About Vicky's Escape

Victoria Hut is a shepherd's hut on a small, select glamping site on the edge of the hamlet of Allerford, inside Exmoor National Park. It sleeps two, holds a five-star rating and takes up to two dogs. The country views are the reason to come, and there is a private hot tub to enjoy them from as the sun goes down.

Inside it is exactly as cosy as a shepherd's hut should be, with a comfortable double bed, a sofa, a gas hob for cooking, a woodburner and a solar-powered fridge and lights, which puts it firmly at the comfortable end of glamping. There is no sink or running water in the hut itself, but tap water and a shared washing-up space are in the nearby facilities building. Unusually for a hut of this kind, the bathroom facilities are not shared: each unit has its own allocated toilet and shower room in that building, around thirty metres away, so you get the privacy without the plumbing.

Outside is a gravelled area with garden furniture for eating out, and a fire pit with a grill for barbecues. Wifi is available and the mobile and 4G signal is good on most networks. Bed linen and towels are provided and there is parking.

Allerford is best known for its fifteenth-century packhorse bridge and the picture-perfect thatched National Trust cottages here and in nearby Selworthy and Bossington. Porlock, about a mile and a half away, is five minutes by car or thirty on foot along a quiet lane, and has pubs, restaurants, tea rooms and shops. Minehead, roughly ten minutes' drive, has the supermarkets and the beach. There are many walks from the door, with Bossington beach and Porlock Weir within easy reach, and North Hill and Dunkery Beacon giving views across the Bristol Channel to Wales.
