Vikings Annexe stands on the outskirts of Minehead in Somerset, high enough to take in coastal and rooftop views across the town and out towards Exmoor. It sleeps four in two double bedrooms, each with its own en-suite, holds a five-star rating and has a private hot tub. It has been recently renovated to a high standard, and the whole design is built around one thing: a large terrace running the full length of the property.
The open-plan kitchen, living and dining area is elegantly done, with bi-fold doors that open straight onto that terrace so the two spaces run together on a good day. In the evening the living area has an electric flame-effect fire to gather round. The kitchen is newly fitted with modern appliances including a dishwasher, and a utility room gives access to a rear courtyard.
Both bedrooms have zip-link beds that can be made up as twins on request, and both have en-suite bathrooms. Gas central heating, free wifi, bed linen and towels are included, along with the cost of electricity and heating.
One thing to know before booking: there are around twenty steps up from the parking area to the front of the property, and the decking makes it unsuitable for children aged eleven and under, though babies not yet crawling are welcome. The private hot tub sits just outside, and there is off-road parking for two cars plus an outdoor 240V point that can charge an electric vehicle with your own cable.
Minehead, a mile away, is a seaside town on the edge of Exmoor with a sandy beach, shops and restaurants. It is the start of the South West Coast Path, the longest countryside trail in the country, and the terminus of the West Somerset Steam Railway, the longest heritage line in Britain. There are excellent walks on North Hill right on the doorstep, and Exmoor stretches out beyond with moorland, wildlife, cosy pubs and a string of picture-postcard villages, with Dunster Castle nearby.
