Ravensprings is a detached Victorian mansion built in 1896 for the Mayor of Brighouse, in a quiet residential setting with a sunny private aspect. It sleeps twenty in eight bedrooms, with three extra beds and a cot available, holds a Gold award and takes three dogs. Most of the furnishings are antique and the house is full of unique features, which makes it quite unlike ordinary self-catering.
A grand period entrance hall opens into a magnificent panelled sitting room with high beams, an open fire and comfortable seating for eighteen; the mahogany panelling came from the ocean liner Mauretania. There is an elegant dining room overlooking Ravensprings Park, which has a miniature railway open to the public once a month in summer, a breakfast room, and a period kitchen with all modern appliances. A downstairs double bedroom with a shower sits opposite the ground-floor cloakroom, which makes it ideal for an older guest, and level access runs throughout the ground floor.
The first floor has four large bedrooms, including a four-poster super-king, two en-suite bath or shower rooms, a family bathroom and a vanity unit in the Edwardian bedroom. The second floor holds a huge family bedroom with six adult-size single beds, four of which came from the Olympic Games, and a separate dormer shower room, plus a Victorian king-size bedroom with fantastic views and a double bedroom with an en-suite bath and a king-size circular bed. Prices include linen, central heating, Sky Sports and Films and wifi in every room; towels are extra. A weekend runs from 4pm Friday to 3pm Sunday, and in low season certain bedrooms can be locked off to offer a discount for smaller groups.
Outside is an enclosed walled garden for children, a patio and barbecue area with ample seating, a balcony, and off-road parking for around five cars. There is a games room with a pool table. Brighouse town centre is a mile down the hill with pubs and good restaurants, and the Old White Beare, the Black Horse, the Grey Ox and Shibden Mill are all within five miles for a gastro lunch. Ten golf courses lie within eight miles and three stables within four. Haworth and the Bronte Parsonage, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the Royal Armouries in Leeds, Eureka! ten minutes away, the National Coal Mining Museum, Hebden Bridge, Holmfirth, Salts Mill at Saltaire and Harewood House are all within reach. Leeds is fifteen minutes, Halifax and Huddersfield ten, Manchester thirty and York fifty. Brighouse station is a mile away and Manchester and Leeds Bradford airports about thirty-five minutes.
